My friend has been arrested four times for DUI in 3 different states, and each time charged with his first offense. Could this catch up with him? Could he lose his liscense permanetly or be looking at jail time?

In Louisiana a third offense DWI is a felony for which he will be ordered to in patient rehab and may face jail time. For a fourth offense, he is facing up to 30 years in jail. Each of the first offenses could be added together to show it is actually a fourth DWI; but the prosecution must prove that he understood the laws, the enhanced penalties, etc., in each of the previous cases. Sometimes this can be difficult when dealing with courts from other states. However, in one of the four states, he now has two. The court could sentence him as if it was a higher grade by looking at his criminal history. This is very serious and it would be advisable for him to seek help for his drinking and/or drug problem.
