Legal Question in Education Law in Louisiana
I attend a college in Hammond, LA. I started in Jan 2010 and will be finished in Feb. 2011. All of us (students) were told when we we enrolled, that the fafsa and financial aid was the school's responsibility, and we shouldn't worry about it. We were to be dispursed two payments, one in feb 2010 and one Aug 2, 2010. For a total of 590.00. We received the first payemnt, but not the second. We all have asked every Thursday since the due date, and are given the answer of "we are waiting on the hardcopy from fafsa to return." After hearing this multiple times, we all called fafsa to get information on our money, a breakdown, what we were approved for, what we got, what we are paying back..etc. It is now all of our opinions, that we were approved for full pell grant amounts, and additional pell grants which we have not received. However, our school has been given this money according to fafsa. We need help, we are being charged for student loans, yet we all qualified for grants that would cover our tuition, plus some!
1 Answer from Attorneys
You need to get documentation of what you are receiving, have received and are still entitled to from the provider. You should then find out from the schools financial aid office what they have received. You are entitled to this information. You may need an attorney whose cost could be split between all concerned. If monies are still an issue, you should go to southeast legal services in Hammond and apply for their services which are free if qualified.
