Medicaid and House
Elderly widow owns house. Thinking about selling, but has to go in nursing home. Are houses exempt from Medicaid reimbursement if no surviving spouse?

A person's residence is not considered as an asset for Medicaid eligibility purposes. Medicaid is entitled to place a lien on the property for the value of benefits rendered to the owner, but that does not happen until after death, and, in my experience, they seldom assert the lien.
If the widow sells the house, the proceeds are considered as an asset, and those funds must be used towards nursing home costs.
