name change during divorce

I moved to California a month and a half ago due to divorce. I was a resident of, was married, and filed for divorce in Louisiana. I would like to change my last name, but I am not sure how to go about doing so. I was also wondering if I could change my last name before the divorce was final. I do not wish to use my maiden name or ex-husbands last name

If you only wanted to return to a former name, then my answer would be simply start using it.

Since you want a new name altogether, call a lawyer in California.
