name change

My husband and i have complete custody of a little boy for 31/2 years. we do not have to go to courts or ocs are anything. we have not recieve help from the state are the parents ever. The father is not on the childs birth records, the mother can never have custody of the child again. She abandoned the children. The little boy is not a blood relative to us. We want know is there any way to change his last name to our since we have complete full custody of him until he is 18 years of age. All he lacks of ours is the last name.

Re: name change

I suggest you adopt the child. That way, your names are shown as his parents on his birth certificate and he now has 2 sets of parents to inherit from. To change his name, you have to have the parents' permission. To by-pass their permission requires the same things that would allow you to adopt. No support or visits for an extended period of time.
