Legal Question in Family Law in Louisiana

Child Support

My daughter will be turning 18 in July. Child support according to the divorce decree will end then. Are there any laws that apply to continuation of support beyond the age of 18? She will be a college student and I, her mother, will still be supporting her. She has lived with me since the divorce 10 years ago.

Re: Child Support

Based on the facts you give, the child support will end when your daughter turns 18. Under La. law, child support would continue until a child's 19th birthday as long as the child is in high school. But one should also remember that parents and children have a reciprocal duty to support each other when in need regardless of age.

Re: Child Support

Here are the basics.......child support ends at 18 years of age OR graduation from high school whichever happens LAST...but at no time shall support continue once the child turns 19 years of age no matter what grade the child is in.....remember though that as a single mother, you may continue to claim your daughter as a dependant as long as you support her and maybe as head of household as long as she is a full time student.......check with an accountant about your rights for tax purposes......if your ex-husband has been able to deduct the child during support payments, now you get to claim the child.
