Legal Question in Family Law in Louisiana

Child Support

my son is 7 and i have never filed for support. I now live in a new state. My son was born in IN, I live in La. We were never married but he did sign paternity at the birth.

The father is native american and lives near his reservation in Montana and seems to think that I have no power in this situation. He has threatened to take my son if I try to get support from him.

Truthfully that does frighten me, should I just leave this alone or is he full of shit and just trying to scare me? Hes gotten away with out paying for this long, I guess his trick is working.

Thanks, Jenni

Re: Child Support

The tribes I am familiar with encourage both parents to support their children. I suggest you contact an attorney in a Louisiana Parish (County) with a strong Native American presence. Because I am familiar with that region my first suggestion would be Allen Parish (Cities of Kinder & Oberlin) where the Coushatta tribe is very strong. Several lawyers there are very knowledgeable in the interaction of Native & State law. There are other strong tribes within Louisiana so you can look in other regions.

For the record he is probably full of it and using his tribe to scare you. If he really wanted to raise the child he had 7 years to prove he cared.
