This may sound inappropriate but I will not advise you how to not use a lawyer. Likewise, my plumber never told me how to change a sewer line.

If you have already paid the lawyer, discuss an accounting for the cost of his services. If you have not hired a lawyer, feel free to shop around and consider other lawyers. Talk to your friends about lawyers that they have used and whether they did the job and at what price.

Any lawyer should be able to put his (her) price in writing and agree to a written contract.

Most lawyers will not handle a contested domestic matter on a flat fee because, even if they have total faith in their own clients, they cannot intelligently have that faith in their client's ex.

More than any other area of law that I practice, the cost of representation in family law is related to the parties willingness to get along. A couple that decides to put differences aside and agree about their children because it is best for those children will normally spend less money than the couple where one (or both) decide that their ex is unworthy of parental rights "because of what they did to me".

I am sorry that this does not answer your question but I preferred explaining instead of rejecting your question.

I probably could have answered your question better than Mr. Casenave, I just don't know how.
