Legal Question in Family Law in Louisiana

My daughter's mother died recently. We were never married. I was wondering what are my rights as the only surviving parent? My daughter is currently living with her mother's mom and she is not allowing me to see my daughter without pressure. My x-girlfriend and i did not always have a good relationship and she also did everything she could to keep my daughter away from me. I paid monthly support and had bi weekly weekend visitation but many times my x would refuse to let me visit.

You need to step up and take responsibility for your daughter. She inherits what her mom had so if she was killed in an accident with a lawsuit, you are the one to press it. Since you paid support and had weekend visitation, you should re-open that suit and press for your natural rights as father. Get an attorney. The longer you wait, the more evidence your child's grandmother will have to limit your contact with and involvement in your daughter's life. There is no reason to cut out the grandmother and you should work together for the best interest of the child.
