Re: Deposition
A deposition is the taking of the testimony of a witness or a party to a lawsuit, before a certified court reporter, under oath. In most cases it allows the parties to evaluate their case better before trial. It also memorializes the testimony in case the witness dies or is otherwise unavailable at trial. The deposition can them be introduced into the record at trial. It can also be used to impeach a witness at trial who alters his previous testimony. Lying at a deposition is perjury, just as if done at trial from the witness stand.
