Legal Question in Family Law in Louisiana

My ex-boyfriend has taken the dog we had and is claiming that it is his. I have all bank records/vet bills/rabies tags in my name paid for with my credit card. All papers have my name and address on them, his name is not tied to my apartment. He and the dog were at his mother's house, and the police informed me to call 911 and have a police officer escort me to get the dog. Now he has moved the dog somewhere and is no where to be found. He also has felony check fraud warrants and failure to appears in two parishes other than where we currently live (in the same state). The police are now telling me that they can't do anything when a few hours ago they told me otherwise. I am stuck, don't know what to do.

This is something that law enforcement probably won't be able to solve. You will have to sue him, if possible in small claims court to regain possession of the dog. If you have a small claims court or a justice of the peace court, you can file the petition yourself and also represent yourself with few problems. Of course, you will need all of your written documentation to substantiate the claim. You will also need to file the suit where your ex resides.
