Legal Question in Family Law in Louisiana

please explain why joint custody doesnt mean joint responsibility.... if i am the domicilary parent and have a chronic illness which requires me to go to many appointments and sometimes in hospital... shouldmt he be ordered to care for child and if my child is sick at school, and i am 45 miles away and the father who has joint custody is 5 miles from the school, even tho its not "his day" shouldnt he be required to pick the child up til i can get back to town?
