Louisiana allows you to obtain a divorce in two ways, if it was not a covenant marriage. You can remain separated for six months, then file and obtain a divorce approximately a month after the other party is served. This, of course, would be if there was no contest. The issue of custody, support and visitation would still need to be determined unless the parties agree or stipulate.

The second method is to file and then wait the six months. You could resolve the issues of custody, support and visitation in the interim.
