Joint custody or sole custody

My friend's 21 year old son has a 1 year old daughter . The patenity test proves he is the father. The mother is about 20 and is not working and possiby using drugs. How can the father legally gain sole custody or shared custody. He has worked two part time jobs for two years and is about to start working full time for Fed Ex. They have nevef been married.

He can hire an attorney and file a petition for custody and/or visitation, just like a divorced parent might.
