Legal Question in Family Law in Louisiana

Legal age for leaving home

I am 17 years old and live in Louisiana. I am graduating from high school on January 13, 2005. Is it legal for me to leave home after i graduate? I know my parents will try to stop me from leaving. Is there anything that they could do to stop me from leaving?

Re: Legal age for leaving home

Dear LawGuru Friend,

No, there is nothing they can do. I am not trying to encourage you to leave, just answering your question. When one reaches his seventeenth birthdy in Louisiana, he is no longer a juenile; and the juvenile authorities have no jurisdiction over him. So you can't be picked up by the juvenile authorities. Also, it's no crime to leave home at age seventeen, so the police have no authority to bother you. With the exception of being able to conatract, gamble, marry or purchase alcoholic beverages you really "in effect" become an adult when you reach age seventeen. Good luck! Remember to trust in the Lord with all your heart and to lean not to you own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your path.

Sincerely,

Hardy Parkerson, Atty.
