Legal Question in Family Law in Louisiana

Hello, Please help me out. I am a Retired Veteran who has been paying almost 9000.00 a month for child support. the child support was started in Columbus, Georgia in 1992. The child will be 18years old on the 18th of this month. I was told by DFAS that I would have to pay 32,000.00 in arrearages. Do I have any legal rights in this matter can the arrearages be stopped now that the child is 18 years old. I have heard that the arrearages can be cut in half. Can you help me with some advice in this situation. Thank you for your time and concern in this matter. John Carter. Please send to [email protected]

May I assume you meant $900 a month equaling $10,800 a year? $9000.00 a month is naturally $108,000 a year. So, if you were able to pay 9 grand a month, 32 grand would be simple.

You will have to get an attorney in Georgia to fight that. Even though the Judgment may have been made executory in Louisiana, you would still have to go to Georgia to challenge that Judgment.

With that said, I have no idea what you are talking about when you say you heard you could get the arrearages stopped or cut in half. An arrearage Judgment is an enforceable Judgment. I am very surprised they have not seized something you have. But I guess if you were ordered to pay 9 grand a month then 32 grand behind after 18 years of paying is not bad.

What I don't understand is June 18th will be the child's 18th birthday and you have been paying since 1992, which is the year of the child's birth. Did you really get divorced and were ordered to pay support the same year of the child's birth?
