Rights of a spouse

If a husband dies, is the surviving spouse entitled to the house, cars, etc. even if the surviving spouse's name is not on the deed/loan for the house and/or car?

It gets complicated, but generally there is a presumption that the surviving spouse owns half and has the use of the other half.
