Legal Question in Family Law in Louisiana
My spouse and I were married in Louisiana(1987). I moved with him for a couple of months in New York. I was not happy so I moved back to Louisiana. We called it quits altogether in 1990 but did not divorce until 2011. My understanding is if you live in one state and your spouse has never lived in that state during the course of the marriage the courts cannot divide property are assets. So does that mean any property that I bought after we separated in 1990 is not community property and I do not have divide it with a man I have not state with in 20 years.

You were married in Louisiana, but it is unclear where your marital domicile was. Did you begin living here then move or did you live in New York and then return to Louisiana as a couple? All property purchased during a marital regime in Louisiana is considered community property unless the parties make the appropriate recorded agreements to the contrary. You need to visit with an attorney who can review all your documents regarding your property acquisitions and advise you accordingly.
You have a real mess. I hope you have a competent and honest attorney.
