Legal Question in Family Law in Louisiana

State Seal

I was divorced in Louisiana and I was wondering why none of my divorce papres or child custody papers don't have a state seal. They have no seals at all.

I have several friends who all got divorced at or around the same time and theirs have seals. Is it leagal to not put a state seal on court doucuments.

Re: State Seal

As long as you know a divorce decree was granted by a court of proper jurisdiction and venue, no "seal" or anything else will make it more or less legal. However, a CERTIFIED COPY of a legal document is considered just as valid and enforceable as the original, and that is probably what your "friends" have in their possession. I AM ASSUMING YOUR "FRIENDS" DECREES ARE FROM STATES OTHER THAN LOUISIANA? And, I assume their "certified copy" requires what you call a "state seal." Nobody needs a certified copy for their divorce to be legal, only if they want something in the judgment to be enforced. Whether or not your judgment of divorce is certified or is just a xerox copy does not affect its "legality." If you have a copy with a stamp (usually blue or purple)and an original signature of a deputy clerk of court, and a seal (a raised impression on the paper) of the clerk of the parish in which you were divorced, then it is probably a certified copy.
