Legal Question in Family Law in Louisiana

taking care of a child thats not mine

My grandmother has been taking care of my godson since he was born. i have helped her because she has been sick and she recently passed in aug. since then i have been the one taking care of the child the mother gets government assistance for him and still offers to do anything. the father who has been in jail since the child was 2 and he is almost 6 just got of jail last week went to my home took all the child's belongings that i brought without my knowledge. the mother gave him consent to go get the child but i had no say in this. so what i want to know do i have any rights and if not what can i do this child has been living with me, ive been taking care of him and this is the thanks i get. ive been with this child since he came to this world. no one has offered help or anything and i do it on my own. so is it possible that i have any rights to this and if not can i take them to court to receive money because to me its seems like what ive done doesnt matter like i have just been babysitting their child for them but at the same time providing without their help without receiving a dime. i am so heartbroken and dont know what to do

Since you do not have custody and to let the child go to his dad or mom would probably be dangerous, you should contact OCS in your parish and get them involved. If you are a relative it will be somewhat easier, but even if not, you have been keeping the child, so it would be in the child's best interest to stay with you. The only other way would be to file for custody.
