Legal Question in Family Law in Louisiana

My wifes father died over 10 years ago. She did not know of his existence until recently. After doing some research to find her dads family to reunite with them we learned that he had another child. Her father happen to own several oil wells. We would like to know if we have any rights to his oil well fortune. Her mother never persued him and he is not on the birth certificate. However, the family admits that she was the child of this man. However, they have not offered any rights to the wells. Any advice would be great.
