If an item was given as a gift for an valentines day, does the giver have the right to demand it back?

No. The giving of a gift transfers ownership of an item, so long as the gift was not given with stipulations or conditions, such as an engagement ring that is given in anticipation of marriage. Unless there was some specific condition that both parties understood at the time it was given (again, like an engagement ring given in anticipation of marriage), the gift cannot be taken back.
