Legal Question in Intellectual Property in Louisiana
patterns
I co-own an apparel company and we were comissioned to make a dress; are the custom created patterns trade secrets(only business partner has seen them, not common knowledge and they are not exposed to visitors)and if the client walks away from the job, are we obligated to give patterns to client if we were hired to produce a dress, not a pattern??

Re: patterns
It would be a matter of contract. If no written contract the person or company who created the pattern would have ownership and rights to sell, reproduce etc.It is the copyright in the finished pattern which is subject to the protection of the law, not a "trade secret".
E.g. the music of the Beatles is subject to protection, even though everyone knows what it is.
