Legal Question in Juvenile Dependency in Louisiana

Confused!

My 16 Year old Step Daughter was involved in a cocaine Bust With her mother. My stepdaughter Was Charged with Distributing Cocaine. Her mother was charged with alot more! What should My stepdaughter Be looking forward to in court? Should we get custody of her? What happens if we do get custody and she runs away and gets in to more trouble?

You should try to get custody. Considering her mother is her co-defendant your husband should win. You might even be able to get an emergency custody order as being brought into the sale of illegal drugs certainly endangers the child. Discuss this with an attorney.

She is lucky she is 16. At 17 she would no longer be a juvenile in Louisiana. What happens will depend heavily on her past. If she has been in trouble before she is more likely to be locked up for a longer time. If she is a first offender she has a better chance at probation.

The juvenile courts are more interested in protecting the child than punishing the offender. I suggest you come up with a plan that includes dealing with any possible addiction problems the child might have.

This might be the last chance to save her young life.
