Legal Question in Employment Law in Louisiana

can an employer get on your personal instant messanger to see if you have been chatting at work legally? They turned my wifes work computer on and the messanger icon popped up and they clicked on it and printed all her IM's and fired her for it. Oh, and they went through all her personal belongings she had at her office.
