gave untruthful reason for lay off
My principal said she was not renewing my contract for next year because they would have to hire a teacher with a degree. She now has hired someone with less experience than I and holds no degree. I was not offered my job back and was lied to. Do employers have the right to just lie and not tell employees the truth about their layoff? I found out that they also are hiring a second person. Should not I have been given the first choice at these jobs?

Unless there is something in your contract that discusses renewal, then at the expiration of your contract, your employer can chose not to renew it. You might have a claim against your employer if the reason they chose not to renew your contract is because of your race, sex, age, etc. If your employer simply decided not to renew your contract because of personality differences or some other non-discriminatory reason, the fact that they lied to you about the reason why they didn't renew it is of no moment legally.
