Louisiana is an at-will employment state. Unless you have an employment contract, your boss can fire you whenever he wants without any reason at all. However, if he makes untrue statements about you (especially to future prospective employers), he can be held liable for damages for defamation and interference of contract. Regardless, if he or anyone else ever gives you illegal orders (such as stealing property for him) the best advice is to record the illegal order and then refuse to carry it out. Then, if you are fired, you will have proof as to why they fired you and why you refused the orders.
