Unpaid Bonus
In a recent position held with a sport organization, I earned over $2,000 in bonuses and $500 in commissions. The $500 was paid at my time of termination but the $2,000 was not paid. Before leaving, my G.M. signed a letter stating that the $2,000 were owed to me and would be paid. I'm under the impression that Louisiana State Law holds that bonuses are considered fringe benefits and therefore are not available to me after termination. Is this correct? Is there any recourse to get the $2,000?

If the bonus was "earned," that is, you did something that activated your right to the bonus, then it is a wage and you should have received it within 3 days of your demanding it. If not, and they were arbitrary in not paying it, then they can be held liable for one day's wage for each day they fail to pay you the money......up to 90 days maximum plus reasonable attorneys fees....... if they owe you the money but the court finds they were not arbitrary in failing to pay you timely, you still get the money, but no penalties, AND they still owe reasonable attorneys fees.....you should seek counsel to represent you.....especially with the statement that the money is owed to you........BTW, my son in law is a professional hockey player in the AHL and my daughter worked for the defunct WPHL and I don't know about other sports, but from the 2 teams I have experience with, they will try to get away with as much as they can......as much as ex-employees let them get away with......
