Does a yearly paid vacation mean from calender year or from date of hire?

No one but the person who wrote the language can answer that. There should be another part of the employment contract or employee manual or employment discription, that says how long one must work at the company to begin "earning" vacation. Is it paid for 1 week, 2 weeks, a month or 2 months? If all it says is a yearly paid vacation, then more needs to be known. It is a common practice to have someone work a full 12 months before they earn any sort of paid vacation. My experience is for example, you start working in June 2010, then on that date in June 2011, you earn the right to start taking a yearly paid vacation, and you can take one during 2011 and again during 2012 and so forth.
