Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Louisiana

Renting in New Orleans

I recently moved out of a shared house in New Orleans. I was not on the lease and had been paying my rent directly to the landlord on the first of every month. I gave written and verbal notification to my landlord that I would be vacating in 30 days and provided it to him with my rent for the final month. Now my former roommate, who is on the lease, is threatening to take me to small claims court for the rent of June and July. What can I do? Also I have never seen the lease he signed because he lost it before I even moved in.

Re: Renting in New Orleans

Your obligations depend on your agreement with your former roommate. Since you were not on the lease, you have no legal obligation to the landlord. However, I assume you and your former roommate had some agreement as to your rent obligation. That agreement is valid, even if it is not written. Oral contracts are valid in Louisiana, just hard to prove.
