Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Louisiana
utility bills suing
I have 2 roommates besides myself who I signed a 1 year lease with. 2 months ago one of my roommate decided to move out and leave my other roommate and I left with the bills for the next 6 months. She is on the lease and still pays rent to the landlord but does not pay bills. Can she get away with that even though we had a verbal agreement when we signed the lease?

Re: utility bills suing
Yes. By signing the lease, she obligated herself to pay her share of the rent. She did not obligate herself to pay anyone else's bills. She is not living there and she receives no benefit from the use of the electricity and other utilities, so she really has no obligation to pay any part of it. Honestly, you should be happy that she is at least paying the rent. All too often, I see roommates who leave and do not even honor their legal obligation to pay their share of the rent, which really leaves those left behind in a lurch.
