Fall from tree
I am being sued by my brother in law because he was cutting a tree in my front yard and he cut too big a chunk and it was falling toward him and he jumped from the ladder and broke his ankle and fractured his knee. I paid him $1,500 up front and was to pay him $1500 upon completion. He is now suing me, he did not have a license to do this. Am I liable and do I need an attorney to represent me?

I agree with Mr. Lambert. Your homeowner's policy may cover the accident so I would contact them to see whether they will provide you with an attorney. If not, you should seek the advice of an attorney immediately.

Not much more to add to what Mr. Lambert and Mr. Louque wrote, except to say, get hold of your homeowners insurance NOW. If you are liable, they will pay.

Anytime you are sued, you need an attorney. A site like this one is great for answering specific questions about prescriptive periods, statutes, etc., but you need representation if you are being sued.
If your brother-in-law also sued your homeowner's insurance for personal injury, the insurance company owes you a defense and they will hire an attorney to represent your interests. Otherwise, you should get your own attorney quickly. Remember, if you have already been served, you only have a few days to file responsive pleadings.
