Legal Question in Personal Injury in Louisiana
Slander
I was a teacher/coach at a school for 8 yrs. After my 8th year my contract was not renewed. After a year I am attempting to get another teaching job. I am having trouble because my previous principal, now retired, upon being contacted by those I interview with has been telling potential employers that I was an immature teacher and coach. It has cost me one job already and may cost another. In my previous teaching evaluations, documented, I was always given high marks. Can I sue for slander?

Re: Slander
Yes, you can sue for statements such as those--especially as they seem so unfounded. I would also bet that those statements are against the school board's rules. Most school boards have rules mandating that only a teacher's hire and fire dates can be given out, along with other documented information, such as awards or documented reasons for termination. By making those sorts of comments about your personal character, that principal has likely exposed himself and the school board to serious liability. I would find an attorney that practices in whatever parish the school board is in (or whatever parish that principal lives in) and seriously consider your legal options.
