Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Louisiana
I was not aware of any balance owed to my previous leaser. I gave them notice of my moving and 1 month prior to my moving. They kept my deposit and now over a year later, I was connected (for the first time) for a balance owed for breaking my lease. My lease was up, I never signed a new lease.
Can they bill me for this balance if I am just receiving notice of this debt a year later?

Open accounts do not prescribe for 3 years from the date of last payment. If you abided by the terms in the written lease for renewal/non-renewal, then you are protected. The terms of the written lease will control this issue. In the lease there may be specific things you must do to prevent automatic renewal.
