Can our landlord charge us for days we do not live here?

We've given our notice to vacate and are planning on paying for the days we will be here in May (notice was given at the beginning of April). Now he wants us to pay for the whole month.

It depends on the lease but usually unless there is an agreement to pro rate the rent-you will owe the entire month. If you vacate by the 31st-you will not.
