Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Louisiana

We live in Louisiana and there is a piece of property about 40 feet deep and 80 feet wide directly behind our property that we have been taking care of as our own for 6 years now. We didn't fence in the back of our property so we could use this extra land as our own. It backs up to a wooded area. We keep the grass cut, had large dead trees removed, planted fruit trees, etc. What would be the first step in trying to gain ownership of this property?
