Legal Question in Traffic Law in Louisiana

drivers license and registration

what is the length of time you have to change you drivers licence and vehicle registration once you move to Louisiana from Alabama? Also, if it is not done prior to that length of time and you get in an accident where you are not at fault will you be able to collect from the other drivers insurance?

Re: drivers license and registration

You are supposed to change your driver's license and registration immediately upon moving here if you have permanently moved here. If your old address is no longer valid, your license does not state a valid address for you and should be changed immediately.

As for your second question, so long as you have insurance, you can collect from the other driver if he is at fault. Louisiana has a "no pay no play" statute that bars uninsured motorists from collecting the first $10,000.00 of property damage and bodily injury from another driver, but there is no such provision barring drivers from other states--nor would such a provision be legal under the Full Faith and Credit Clause and the Equal Protection Clause of the United States Constitution.
