Legal Question in Traffic Law in Louisiana
I received a traffic summons today that claimed that I tampered with the inspection sticker. I did not tamper with the sticker and the citation summons is not legible. What are my rights?

You can take the ticket to court. It is a traffic citation. Because it is your word against the officer, and because the officer has no real interest in whether you receive a ticket, the court weighs his/her testimony heavily. Because you do have a vested interest in being exonerated, your testimony will require evidence in addition to your testimony. This could be your receipt for the sticker, photos, other witness testimony, etc. The bright spot is that this citation is a non-moving violation which will not affect your insurance rating. You should try to talk to the prosecutor prior to court. Usually it is better before the day of court and you could communicate by letter mailed or faxed. The prosecutor could dismiss the citation or amend it to something that might be less costly like a failure to wear a seatbelt.
