Legal Question in Traffic Law in Louisiana

Sold vehicle in accident

My wife and I had a vehicle that we still owed money on, but wanted to sell. A co-worker agreed to make payments on the vehicle with a down payment to us that went to pay off the car. We left the license plates on the car until they could change them in their name. They never did. They got in an accident, were at fault and had no insurance. The company van that was hit sent me a bill for $5,000+ saying that I agreed to personally pay for the damages. I was not in the car, or even in the state. I sold the car, but the registration was still in my name. This was all before I could send them the title, but I was unaware of the accident, because I moved out of state. What can I do if they decide to sue?

Re: Sold vehicle in accident

You can sue the actual driver for subrogation. I suggest you consult with a lawyer in the state where the collision occured ASAP.
