death w out a will ...
my grandfather died without a will and he and my grandmother owned a home. they have 8 kids, only 1 was a minor at the time of his death. what happens with the property if my grandmother wants to give it to someone else.

Unless the 8 children agree she cannot. Since there was no will, intestate succession law states that the grandfather's half of the community property belongs to his children.
