Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Louisiana

My Father died intestate in the state of Louisiana. Survived by a wife and 3 children. Does the wife have to file succession, and also, how do the children get there share of what our Father left to us. He refused to write a will and or to give his wife power of attorney once diagnosed stage 4 lung cancer. He has a rather large estate. Thank you for any advice that you can offer.

His power of attorney would have died with him so that was useless. The wife gets 1/2 of the community property and use of the other half. Anything not community goes to the children. Any heir or creditor can open the succession, so get a lawyer and open it.
