if my husband have other children from a previous marriage, do we need to get a will to protect our assets if the children decide to sue for half of what their father owned

First, I think wills are important to make sure your wishes are followed. Your husband children will inherit one-half of any community property and all of any separate property unless a will states differently. Please consider having a will written for each of you.
