Obtaining Power of Attorney Without Permission?
Is there a method of obtaining power of attorney or some other form of guardianship over an adult alcoholic who can no longer take care of their self? His parents are elderly and he refuses to give POA to any one (parents, children, etc.) He has been removed from his occupation, is not working, not paying bills (which are impacting ex-spouse's credit rating), will not leave his home which is on the market. He has been through rehab countless times to no avail. He is not taking care of him self (hygiene, eating, keeping home clean). Only leaves house to buy alcohol. Any advice on how this family can obtain the authority to handle business without his express permission?

Re: Obtaining Power of Attorney Without Permission?
You don't need a power of attorney. It would not take away his own power to be self-destructive. His wife needs to contact a lawyer about interdiction. This would be a procedure to have the court declare him incompetent to manage his own affairs.
