Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Louisiana

Property ownership when no will was left.

My mothers neighbor passed away last week. My mother is the beneficiary of an insurance policy which will cover burial costs. However no will or any signed document was left indicating what was to become of the house or it's contents. The lady had no one left in the family, she was alone. What will happen to the house and its contents? Can my mother and father do anything legally to claim the house?

Re: Property ownership when no will was left.

If there are no living relatives, no matter how distant, and the person died without a will, then, under Louisiana law, the property belongs to the state.
