Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Louisiana
My sister and I are trying to determine if we need to hire a lawyer. Our fathers death preceded our grandfathers death by one year. His only sibling- my aunt is now telling us that our grandfather left us out of his will on purpose because he did not like who I married and we would be left nothing. There is only a home and 45 acres approximately. My sister and I were 18 and 13 when our father passed away and our grandfather passed away one year later with no known relationship issues between us beforehand.

It will depend on what the will says. In Louisiana, forced heirship only protects children of the deceased under the age of 23 or those which are disabled severely. If he wrote the will prior to your father's death and your grandfather left a portion to your father, you will inherit his portion. Unless your grandmother left a will leaving everything to your grandfather or disinheriting your father or his heirs(if she is also deceased), one half of any community property your grandfather possessed would go to your fathers heirs and your aunt. I would at least bring copies of the wills to an attorney who regularly works with successions.
