My wife is the only child. Her mother is deceased. When her father dies, will the house be hers automatically. What steps will she have to take.

Yes.
Assuming that her parents did not have wills, your wife will inherit all of her parents' assets. She may be able to be recognized as such and have the house placed in her name by an affidavit process, and avoid probate.
