Legal Question in Consumer Law in Maine
didn't realize what she was signing
My legally blind, hard of hearing 83 yr old mother, was home alone when a man from a car dealer came to the house and said, please sign these papers acknologying your son is purchasing a vehicle. Her first response to this man was ''I'm not co-signing a loan for him. He insisted it was just so she knew he was buying this car. She signed all kinds of papers. My first thought was how dumb can you be but of course did not say that.I asked her for a copy of what she signed, of course he didn't leave any paper work and she doesn't know his name. Few weeks later a payment book arrives in the mail and she now owes a total of $27,700.00 of which she cannot pay. She's on SS, Medicare, she just gets by. Fuel assistance and various programs help her.
Would you please give me some advice to help her and I also need advice how to become her power of attorney she no longer wants to sign anything, she's scared.
Thank you
Karen
