collection of money owed for winter snowplowing

During the winter of 04-05 I plowed snow for a party and

they still owe quite a substantial amount (180). Ive sent

bills but they go ignored for the most part. I have been

sent small amounts now and then which I suppose proves that

they acknowledge the debt. What can I do to collect on this

debt without it costing me thousands of dollars which I dont

have. Thank you for any assistance.

Your least expensive legal option is to file a small claim action. Your local District Court has the forms. The cost is $40 to file, plus more to serve the Defendant by Sheriff, and you can seek to have those costs added into the Judgment to be paid by the Defendant if you are successful. A Hearing would likely be scheduled a month or so later, and the Hearing is informal, just provide copies of payments made to the Judge with your testimony of the work done, amount still owned, and bring along any contract that exists. As you point out hiring a lawyer would not be productive for you in this matter.
