Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Maine

collection phone calls

I owe a credit card company money. I have tried to make a payment arrangement with them but the collection agency says that they can't take an arrangement they want to total in full now! Is the collection agency allowed to call my place of employment 2-3 times a day, everyday and call me names and degrade me after I have asked many times for them not to call me there?

There are Maine and Federal Statutes- The "Fair Debt Collection Practices Act" that are supposed to prevent collection agencies from harassing you in this way, and they are not supposed to contact you at your place of work when requested not to, and should not identify themselves to your co-workers. The problem with these statutes is proving the violations. You may want to provide written notice to the collection agency that you want the calls to cease, offer payment, explain your circumstances, detail the exact harassment they have engaged in, and save a copy of your letter. You may also want to consider a consumer counseling service or hiring an attorney.
