Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Maine

Creditors disclosing personal information about debt to others

I had a credit card debt that I could not pay. A representative from the credit card company continually called my parents house in order to try and collect the debt. On one of these instances the representative disclosed information about my debt including how much I owed and for how long to my father, which I did not authorize. Is there any way that I can use this to get rid of the debt completely?

There is no CERTAIN way to get rid of them; bill collectors are like cockroaches, sometimes. The best bet, short of a bankruptcy case, is to pay a lawyer for an hour of his/her time to write the bill collector a really nasty letter. More often than not, that does it. If not, the lawyer can sue them because this conduct sounds like a violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices law and the Consumer Protection law. Like I said, pay a lawyer for an hour and see what happens. Good luck!
